I used to seriously struggle with curating my wedding photography portfolio. In fact it used to get pushed to the back burner and haunt my dreams. Let me tell you about how my photography business began, and how it’s going…
I’ve been a wedding and family photographer for a couple of decades now. I’ve won international awards (most proud of the time in which one of my photos was selected by Magnum photographer: Elliott Erwitt, which gave me the confidence that I have talent) BUT, for many years I didn’t have the portfolio to prove it. Word of mouth is how I got my clients, which was great back in the day where there was no social media. In 2005, I hired a designer to build a website for me, but I had no idea how to go to the backend and update my images. So, even as I was getting better at my craft, there was no way to show it.
I used to be the typical artist who does not know how to do business. I didn’t have the right mindset to grow and be profitable with my talent. Until I found D’Arcy Benincosa in 2019. I was drawn to her by her beautiful images and the way she used storytelling in her IG captions. It was not hard for me to figure out that she was coaching a local photographer I was following at the time, which was growing her business tremendously thanks to her advice. So I became a fan and started to listen to her podcast and get all the great content she was putting out into the world. D’Arcy is so talented and has so much wisdom, you can get tons of free useful tips by just following her and listening to her podcast Play it Brave. She has a really nice voice too which is very important to me (I get annoyed very easily if I don’t like the voice) while listening to podcasts or an online course.
I was lucky to have my website reviewed by her that same year, and it was a game changer for me. She was brutally honest and to the point: My site looked dated, all over the place (I could not commit to just one style), lacked call to action buttons, etc, etc. I immediately started to make changes, investing in educating myself on how to transform my passion for photography into a profitable business, and I did it during a pandemic. D’Arcy’s courses are by far the best investment I’ve made for my business. Hands down.
With D’Arcy I’ve learned how important it is to have a consistent portfolio to attract my ideal client and give a luxury experience so I could raise my prices. Now I’m so confident as a wedding photographer, I believe my portfolio is not only a collection of beautiful images, but also a reflection of my artistic vision, technical skills and ability to capture the essence of every couple’s love story.
AND I’ve tripled my profits ever since. I had my first 5 figure wedding last fall and I am continually booking my ideal client now.
